We split the weekend, coming from behind again to beat the Rebels 5-4 and falling to The Thunder 0-9.
Game one was tight all the way to the end. Troy pitched 4 strong innings allowing only 2 runs on 4 hits with no walks and SIX strikeouts. Carson closed out allowing 2 runs on 3 hits, walked one and struck out 3 in 2 innings of relief.
Defense was solid committing only one overt error. Zach was a vacuum cleaner at short. Brad and Holden did solid duty catching.
The offense, while sporadic, was enough to do the job. Zach was 3 for 3 leading the way. Harry again came through with a huge double that alert base running combined with a Rebel error allowed the big fella to round the bases. Carson had a single in the 4th, and singles by Troy, Zach and Brad mixed with a few walks in the sixth pushed the winning run across.
All in all a well played game that kept us close and threatening all the way until we could tip the scales.
Game two saw the defense stumble and the offense completely fall over. Zach pitched solidly for 3 innings actually allowing no hits, but 3 walks and 3 errors allowed 4 runs to score. Eric got hit pretty hard in the 4th and Carson came on to shut them down in the 5th and 6th allowing no runs on 2 hits and one walk and one error.
The defense although committing more errors, did turn in some pretty good plays including good plays by Sean at second and left field and likewise for Tyler at the same positions. Holden had a good day at third ranging down the line with the long throw to Carson along with two other put outs. We were in danger of getting 10 runned until Brad nailed a runner attempting to steal third in the 6th.
Offense was really, really quiet. Although we did not strike out much, we certainly hit a lot of routine ground balls and infield pop ups. Zach blammed the ball hard twice, once to left and once to right center but both shots wound up in outfielder's gloves. It was however, left to Jacob to break up the combined no hitter with a strong single to right in the 4th.. way to go Jake ..."hips, hands and head" swing and a rip to right!
We had better number before tonight's game but our top 5 guys are still doing well.
Top 5 hitters:
Zach .611
Troy .359
Brad .333
Harry .300
Carson .294
Zach has the most singles by far with 11
Troy the most doubles: 3
Eric has scored the most runs: 7, followed by Zach with 5
Steven, Carson and Eric are tied for most walks drawn: 5 ea.
Zach, Carson, Harry, and Steven all tied for fewest strikeouts: one ea.
I have not had a chance to compile pitching stats but by in large all of our pitchers have done much better than I anticipated in pre-season. Walks are at a minimum and in fact well below expected at this level. Almost everyone has had and excellent outing and most have had a rough outing caused by errors for the most part.
We are now at 3-4 for the season, and I see no reason we cannot finish strong.
